Here are some sample math problems from schools in India, grades 1-12.

The problems reflect the general level of difficulty that students face in math classes throughout India. However, no claim is made that they cover the full range of concepts teachers may introduce in their classes to strengthen the skills of their students as they progress from one grade to another.

While standards can vary from school to school and region to region, an emphasis on rigor and a connection with everyday life are common features of Indian math education. There is less talk about developing vague critical thinking skills and more about solving difficult problems involving laborious calculations, by hand rather than by calculators, which most students do not have access to anyway.

BeyondGPA™ has enhanced the problems with some facts from India’s history and geography. The idea is that as you solve these problems, you will also learn something about the country and its people. Where it makes sense, BeyondGPA™ also compares the Indian context with the American context.

Give the problems a try. If, for instance, you are a 4th grader in America and find the sample problems for your grade too easy, step up one or two levels. If, on the other hand, you find some of them too difficult, solve the ones you can and try solving the demanding ones from a lower level.

The important thing is to master math - addition, subtraction, multiplication, long division, fraction, percentage, ratio and proportion, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus and all kinds of word problems - through hard and rigorous work and develop an appreciation for the difficult and the demanding, not to feel complacent or inadequate.

If you are stuck or are not satisfied with your solution, ask for help from your peers and friends. The guiding principle of BeyondGPA™ is that it is students who can best help other students. That is why solutions to the math problems will not be posted. With help from your friends, you will know when a particular problem has been solved.

Post the problems and any question you may have on BeyondGPA™’s forums and see the responses roll in. Before you know it, you will be solving problems posted by your peers yourself.

BeyondGPA™ will monitor the quality of responses and recognize students for their clarity, insight and brilliance, and particularly those who are patient and persistent in getting their points across in a friendly way.

One significant difference between Indian and American schools is the cost of textbooks. A math textbook for grade 9, for example, costs about rupees 100 (US $2.50) in India. In contrast, the 9th-grade American math text can cost anywhere from $75 to $120 (Rupees 3,000 to 4,800.) The exorbitant cost of textbooks is a financial burden for many American parents and an impediment to learning. There is no reason why textbooks cannot be as affordable as the average fiction/non-fiction paperbacks in America.

You can modify and distribute the sample questions in any way you please. All we ask is that you give credit to BeyondGPA™ (http://www.beyondgpa.com) and invite your friends and colleagues to consider using its services.
